Turn an aging winery into a timeless destination, not just another cellar door.
We were engaged by the owners who had taken over the cellar door and vineyard from Arrowfield. It was an exciting but daunting project due to the scale of works. I remember my first visit to the site and seeing this large tin shed which had a sad atmosphere of neglect around it. Once I walked inside I was immediately transformed and inspired, excited with my thoughts and the possibilities. The area had large original timber beams for supports which were one of my favourite features and still are. We changed the lighting to enhance these beams. We also engaged a local ironmaster to follow my design for a bespoke entrance chandelier into the Vines Restaurant. We had to divide the large space into a Cellar Door and Restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating, conference rooms and function rooms, amenities and Chefs Kitchen with storage. We kept the original concrete floors that had parquetry inserts which was all renovated back to its original glory. The “Cellar Door” was set up to reflect a comfortable country lounge overlooking the magnificent Coolmore Horse Stud. The joinery for the Cellar Door and Vines Restaurant was all designed by The Essential Detail. The Restaurant – Vines – was to cater for individuals, groups and special events. We wanted an eclectic look of tables and chairs that were comfortable for long enjoyment. Grand mirrors and specially-commissioned artworks added character and interest to the huge space. The restaurant kitchen had to cater for restaurant dining, café style, tapas and function catering across the day. The exterior was changed to create drama and to let more natural light in. Now as soon as you drive along the Golden Highway you see the inviting russet and charcoal colours.
