BEACH BUNGALOW

BRIEF
To design a one-bedroom bungalow utilising the footprint of the client’s second double garage, providing overflow accommodation for family and friends or an option for rental.

ACHIEVEMENT
We created a light-filled, casual coastal getaway that embodies relaxation and comfort, incorporating heating beneath the elegant travertine flooring.

Downstairs features a cozy bedroom with access to an enclosed private courtyard, generous custom wardrobes, and additional storage integrated into the bed base. The bathroom, which also serves as a laundry space, was efficiently designed due to limited square footage. A fluted glass barn door allows flexible access to the shower and WC, while a fluted glass dividing wall maximises natural light.

To enhance ventilation and brightness, we installed glass louvres above the door and a fluted glass panel above the shaving cabinet, bringing light from the stairwell. The materials selected include a Spanish-style wall tile in soft sea tones and subway tiles laid in a basket-weave pattern for visual interest. Oak laminates and white finishes provide crisp lines, while the shaving cabinet features three-sided LED strip lighting for practicality. We also incorporated wash baskets and storage solutions to optimise the space.

The custom Victorian Ash stairs feature a double riser for added interest, complemented by a wall stair rail with LED lighting for a soft glow. Rather than a standard balustrade, we opted for floor-to-ceiling battens, ensuring safety while allowing light to filter through and adding dimension to the area.

A raked ceiling on this level creates an airy feel, further enhanced by oversized skylights that illuminate the stairwell.

Upstairs, a full kitchen equipped with European appliances and ample storage flows seamlessly into a dining area. The island serves as both a prep space and a dining area, featuring a curved stone top supported by a pedestal base. The custom sofa, upholstered in vegan leather, combines practicality with luxurious oversized cushions and throws.

The upstairs area opens to a balcony featuring a raised garden with various plants, softening the street view. We chose oversized wall uplights for ambient lighting and fun organic pendants in the stairwell and over the dining island, ensuring a cozy atmosphere while maintaining directional downlights in the kitchen.

To give the beach bungalow its unique identity and enhance street appeal, we incorporated timber-look aluminum curved battens for the front balustrade and matching cladding for the balcony ceiling.

The outdoor areas feature French-style paving in both courtyards and composite decking along the walkway to the front door, creating layered texture and interest. An easy-care garden, irrigated with rainwater from the client’s tanks, enhances the courtyard and balcony. Copper outdoor lighting complements the coastal setting, developing a beautiful aged patina over time.

The bungalow offers secure, independent entry while also providing access from the main property.
