BRIEF:
A modern farmhouse aesthetic to keep up with a young family.
RESPONSE:
The original cottage lacked natural light and adequate space to accommodate the growing family’s eclectic style and playful nature. To address these challenges, we embarked on a transformative journey, starting with salvaging the original floorboards on the ground floor after reinforcing the home’s foundations. Given the property’s acreage setting, our aim was to create a welcoming and practical mudroom experience upon entering the house. Embracing a black and white theme, we adorned the space with captivating Moroccan-style floor tiles.
In the kitchen, we incorporated a concealed laundry and expanded the bench space, featuring a stunning recycled timber parquetry top for the island. The concrete laundry tub became a striking focal point, complemented by copper taps and a recycled timber wall, adding to the overall aesthetic. A split recycled timber barn door was installed to keep pets out while allowing refreshing breezes to flow through. The existing wood fireplace received a rejuvenation with new stone dry stone cladding, adding to its allure.
A truly magnificent feature, the industrial staircase was meticulously crafted using steel and recycled timber treads and posts. Designed to create an open and airy feel, it allows the ample natural light from the large void to bathe the home. The main bathroom showcases an original claw slipper bath, harmoniously accompanied by black and white tiles arranged in a reverse pattern from the entrance. Barn-style timber-look floor tiles further enhance the space. The shower walls boast white subway tiles with black grout, while the remaining walls feature black-painted shiplap cladding. Windows and French doors, crafted from black aluminum with a raised profile, offer a timber-like appearance without the associated upkeep.
Upstairs, the parents’ retreat unfolds, encompassing an office area, whisky room, master bedroom, and ensuite. The clients imported selenite panels from Mexico, infusing the master bedroom with the natural energy of selenite. This delicate endeavor yielded remarkable results, contributing a unique and captivating aspect to the home. To extend the existing chimney through the second storey, we carefully selected recycled bricks, now showcased as a standout feature in the master suite. The bed-head was thoughtfully designed and handcrafted from recycled timber, adding a touch of rustic charm. All lighting choices were meticulously selected to enhance the New York barn ambiance.
The exterior boasts grand barn doors, each custom-designed by us and expertly crafted from recycled timbers. This home has undergone a remarkable transformation, evolving into a splendid contemporary farmhouse—a sanctuary for the family to cherish and celebrate.
