The Designer

Susan Simmons:
Susan has been working as a designer/decorator for over 25 years. Susan’s first business – Sashes & Bows – specialised in home decoration. Susan’s passion for, and talent with, a range of decorative crafts grew into a successful business selling her hand-made designs at markets and, eventually, through a range of homewares stores across Sydney.

During this time Susan ran classes at which she taught art, as well as a range of crafts, travelling widely throughout NSW to offer intensive, week-long courses hosted by a number of different organisations. Susan’s talent for presentation and eye for detail led to work as a photographic stylist. Beginning with Australian Country Craft, Susan’s styling gained a reputation for flair with precision and a number of advertising jobs followed, in both print and television. Her skills in this field even resulted in work as a food stylist – recognised as one of the most difficult fields.

As Susan’s flair for design became more widely recognised – certainly helped along by a TV interview with David Koch in the early 1990’s - the business expanded into a complete interior design service. In 2002, Sashes & Bows became The Essential Detail and rapidly outgrew the existing space. A shopfront was established on the NSW Central Coast, incorporating a retail homewares business and café. As successful and enjoyable as these ancillary enterprises were, Susan found herself forced to limit the time she could afford to spend on her true passion – Design. Rather than compromise, Susan chose to close the retail businesses and refocus fully on her consultancy.

In 2004, Australian House and Garden named Susan as one of Australia’s top designers in their Top 50 Rooms awards.

In addition to her current projects, Susan also acts as a design consultant for Freedom Kitchens

A small selection of projects undertaken by The Essential Detail can be viewed in the accompanying Gallery. Amongst Susan’s residential work has been consultation on the construction/renovation of a number of beach-houses, large homes on acreage, suburban homes, apartments (including the renovation of entire blocks) and town-house developments.

The commercial projects include restaurants, cafes, retail shops (fashion, jeweller, homewares), travel agencies, real estate agencies, professional rooms for an ophthalmologist and even a pool building company.

Susan’s most recent work has included the renovation of Hollydene Estate Winery (originally Arrowfield), including Cellar Door and 150-seat restaurant in the Upper Hunter Valley of NSW. The recently (re)-opened winery has already received a number of glowing reviews, with specific mention made of the beautiful space which has been created. It is a project of which Susan is, justifiably, extremely proud.
